Town Manager Matt Sturgis provided several operational updates to the Cumberland Town Council on Sept. 22.
Waste collection events: Sturgis announced three consecutive fall waste collection weekends in October at the Public Works garage on Drown Road. Events are scheduled 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.: Oct. 11 — universal/e‑waste collection; Oct. 18 — confidential document shredding; Oct. 25 — bulky item drop‑off. “The town's gonna host 3 consecutive waste weekend waste collection events in October. All 3 events will take place from 9AM to 1PM at the Public Works Garage on Drown Road,” Sturgis said.
Regional partnerships: Sturgis said he has met with municipal managers from Yarmouth, North Yarmouth and Falmouth to discuss shared services and assets; a follow‑up meeting is scheduled Oct. 1 at 4 p.m. in the Cumberland council chambers.
LD 1829 planning workshop: Staff are organizing a joint workshop on LD 1829 for Oct. 27 at 5:30 p.m., ahead of the council meeting that evening. Bridget (planning staff) will present mapping and recommendations to inform ordinance and comprehensive plan discussions.
Solar projects: Sturgis reported that documentation and contracts are signed for the town’s solar expansion at the Drown Road site and for the West Cumberland expansion, and that materials are being sourced to meet safe‑harbor requirements for tax incentives. “All the documentation for the town's expansion, for our Drown Road site has been signed… materials are all being sourced,” he said.
Route 100 RFP: The town released a request for proposals for Route 100 road safety improvements for the segment between Lower Methodist Road and Range Road; the proposal deadline is Oct. 30. Sturgis said staff will reach out to established local contractors.
Other items: Sturgis noted that floats at Broad Cove Reserve will be removed Oct. 14 and reminded councilors about an upcoming planning board and comp plan coordination. Councilors asked clarifying questions about workshop timing and compliance deadlines for LD 1829; staff said Bridget is preparing housekeeping elements to help the town remain in compliance with statutory timelines.
These items were provided as informational updates; no council votes were taken on the items Sturgis reported.
