The Newnan City Council on Sept. 23 voted to grant a request to demolish a residential structure at 823 Lower Fayetteville Road.
City staff opened a public hearing on the demolition request and noted that the estimated cost to repair the building exceeds a threshold used in the city's review; a staff member read an estimated repair value of $28,081. No members of the public opposed the demolition at the hearing.
Joseph Potaro, who identified himself as “the representative for Mr. Raxdale,” and contractor Tony Lewis spoke to the council at the microphone. Lewis told the council the property contains asbestos and said, “Hopefully, in the next 4 to 5 weeks, it will be completed.”
After the public hearing, a council member moved and a second was made; the council approved the demolition by voice vote. The council gave no additional conditions on the record and did not identify a timetable for the council's follow-up or inspections.
The contractor described the immediate steps required before demolition: asbestos abatement, follow-up maintenance work, demolition of the structure and sealing or grading of the basement or crawl space. No permit numbers, bond amounts or specific compliance deadlines were provided in the meeting record.
The council's vote grants the property owner authority to proceed with abatement and demolition under applicable city permitting and environmental rules; the meeting record does not show any separate vote or staff report setting a start date beyond the contractor's estimate.
