Board approves contract with GI John’s for portable restrooms; two weekly cleanings during busy season

The New Canaan Board of Selectmen voted unanimously on Sept. 23 to authorize the parks and recreation department to enter into a contract with GI John’s of Monroe, Conn., for portable sanitation services and cleaning.
Parks staff said GI John’s offered the best combination of service and responsiveness after the town requested pricing from three vendors. The contract covers rental and servicing of the town’s portable toilet inventory, which fluctuates seasonally; staff said the town typically maintains about eight units in scattered locations, plus two units at the Dunning Stadium and additional units for special events.
The contract authorized by the board is not to exceed $18,500, with a contingency of $1,850, for a total potential cost of $20,350. Staff explained the town’s needs include an additional unit at the paddle area when outdoor facilities are closed and two weekly cleanings during peak seasons; the proposal includes either a Monday/Thursday or Tuesday/Friday cleaning schedule.
Parks staff said the town has trialed GI John’s service at past events (including the fall fair) and found them responsive. The contract will cover sanitation for festivals, athletic events, Dunning Stadium use, and overflow needs for other seasonal programs. The board approved the contract by unanimous vote.
