The Sandusky City Commission on Sept. 22 approved an MOU between the city and the Fraternal Order of Police, Ohio Labor Council, and adopted an ordinance amending the codified ordinance provision on additional compensation (longevity) so police employees receive parity with other collective bargaining units.
City staff explained the union requested the change to bring longevity payments for police employees into parity with two other bargaining units. A staff representative said the administration concurred and proposed matching longevity payments across the city’s collective bargaining agreements.
Both the MOU and the ordinance amending Part 1, Administrative Code, Title 5, Officers and Departments, Chapter 145, Section 145.29 — Additional Compensation (Longevity) were adopted under suspension of the rules in accordance with section 14 of the city charter. The meeting record shows the ordinances were approved by roll call; commissioners present voted yes.
The meeting record does not specify the exact dollar amounts of the longevity increases or the effective date beyond the ordinances’ statement that they take immediate effect per section 14 of the city charter. The administration characterized the change as a parity adjustment across the city’s three collective bargaining agreements.
Next steps: the city will implement the increased longevity payments as provided by the adopted ordinance and memorialized in the MOU.
