Roseville awards Verizon Connect GPS contract for DPS fleet, citing 20% savings

Roseville City Council voted Sept. 23 to award a single-source contract for GPS tracking and telematics to Verizon Connect for the Department of Public Services fleet.
City Manager Monroe told council the contract would replace the city’s expired agreement with the current vendor and is available through Sourcewell, a cooperative purchasing program that offers government pricing. Staff said the switch would yield about a 20% savings compared with current costs.
The GPS units will be used on DPS vehicles including plow trucks and the street sweeper, Monroe said; the system provides live access for the DPS director and records metrics such as time on a street segment, speed and time spent on individual tasks. Council members asked whether the contract term included three- or five-year options; staff said the recommendation was for a three-year agreement with an option to extend.
Why it matters: City staff said the telematics system will help document street maintenance activity and support responses to resident complaints. Staff also told council that seasonal vehicles can be deactivated under the new arrangement, potentially lowering costs.
Councilman Knox moved to award the bid; Mayor Pro Tem Haass supported the motion. The council voted in favor and awarded the contract to Verizon Connect.
