Mayor Eugene Bustamante read and signed a proclamation declaring October 2025 as Domestic Violence Awareness Month in El Campo and recognized local services available to survivors. The proclamation, presented at the Sept. 22 council meeting, described the work of the Bridal Center of Matagorda and Wharton County (named in the proclamation) and listed services the center provides: advocacy, education, shelter and confidential resources. The proclamation cited annual statistics presented at the meeting: the center provided services to 1,061 clients and 6,970 nights of shelter to adults and children during the past year. A representative from the center thanked the council for the proclamation, encouraged community participation in scheduled events, and invited the public to the center’s Walk a Mile in Their Shoes event on Wednesday, Oct. 1, starting at 11:30 a.m., with a walk to the courthouse at noon, a short program and complimentary pizza and a free T‑shirt for participants. The representative said the walk is escorted by Wharton Police Department. The council’s proclamation included language noting domestic violence affects all communities regardless of age, race, disability, gender identity or socioeconomic status. The proclamation was signed by Mayor Bustamante and recorded in the meeting as adopted.
