Farmers praise county agriculture staff; county urges caution when encountering farm equipment on roads

During the public-comment portion of the Sept. meeting, farmer Debbie Norris of Hillsborough thanked county staff for support to the agricultural community, specifically singling out newly placed agricultural staff and the County Agricultural Development Board.

Norris said the county’s assistance is timely and important and noted the week is National Farm Safety Week. Earlier in the meeting, county officials had urged motorists to be patient when encountering farm equipment on county roads after a recent collision between a car and farm equipment; officials said such equipment is designed for field work and often must travel from field to field across public roads.

Commissioners and staff also highlighted county arts-and-agriculture efforts such as the barn quilt tours and museum/ribbon-cutting events that county cultural and heritage grants help support. Director Robinson and other commissioners said the county’s planning and cultural programs aim to tie agriculture, history and tourism together as part of the county master plan.

During public comment, Debbie Norris said, “Kate Katzer has been an incredible asset to the farming community,” and thanked county staff for the assistance. She spoke in support of staff roles and the county’s engagement with farming organizations.

The board did not take any formal action during the public-comment period. The county encouraged residents to contact the agricultural board and county planning staff for assistance and resources and noted upcoming events such as history-month activities and farm-tour information on the county website.
