Summary
A resident said parents are cutting through neighborhood streets, speeding, parking illegally and behaving aggressively during student drop-off and pick-up near Sandia Vista Elementary; she said police tickets have not stopped the behavior and asked the district to act.
At the Sept. 22 Rio Rancho Public Schools Board meeting, resident Beth Denner told the board she lives in the Loma Syncatanas neighborhood near Sandia Vista Elementary School and said parents regularly cut through neighborhood streets, speed, park near the school and display aggressive behavior during student pick-up and drop-off.
Denner said neighbors have worked with city staff (she named Mr. DeSoto) and requested signage to prevent unsafe stopping, but she said parents continue to use neighborhood streets for school pick-up. She told the board police have issued tickets but described the situation as a “hamster wheel” that continues to create a safety risk. Denner said she has contacted the superintendent and the school resource officer and had not received a response.
Board President Amanda Galbraith read the district’s public-comment procedure to remind speakers that the board cannot respond to comments not on the agenda during the meeting. The board encouraged residents to submit comments via the district website or attend in person for future public comment.
