Board begins nationwide superintendent search after Dr. Lisa Cleveland announces retirement

The Rio Rancho Public Schools Board of Education on Sept. 22 opened a nationwide search to replace Superintendent Dr. Lisa Cleveland after the district announced her pending retirement. Chief Legal Counsel Lauren Hatch told the board the announcement and the opening of a search followed Dr. Cleveland’s 30-plus years of service to the district and state.
Board President Amanda Galbraith and members described the decision as historic for the district and emphasized a desire for a transparent, inclusive process. Galbraith said the board intends to retain a consulting firm to assist and that the search process is expected to last several months with an anticipated transition during the spring, depending on variables.
During public comment before the agenda item, resident Patricia Camp asked how the district would communicate the search timeline and whether the district would provide a dedicated web page and stakeholder meeting notices. Galbraith responded that the board would provide more information on the website after a firm is on board and that the board is committed to transparency and community involvement. Patricia Camp also congratulated Dr. Cleveland and noted the board’s two core duties are hiring a superintendent and setting policy.
Board member Jessica Tyler made the motion to open a nationwide search and direct the district to retain a consultant; Gary Tripp seconded. The motion passed on a voice vote. The board said it will publish additional process details after the consultant is retained and requested staff collect community input opportunities.
