Board approves continued partnership with National Dance Institute for elementary program

The Rio Rancho Public Schools Board of Education on Sept. 22 approved a memorandum of understanding to continue the district’s partnership with the National Dance Institute of New Mexico (NDI). Kurt Schmidt, the district’s executive director for fine arts, described the program as a multi-week movement curriculum for fourth graders that aims to build confidence and healthy habits.
Kurt Schmidt introduced Zach Smith, the NDI 30-week program producer, who told the board NDI’s purpose is “to help children develop discipline, a standard of excellence and a belief in themselves that can carry through into all aspects of their lives.” Kurt Schmidt said the program runs at four elementary schools in the district (Puesta, Collinas, Maggie and Tanya) with two schools served in the fall and two in the spring.
Board member Jessica Tyler moved to approve the memorandum of understanding; Gary Tripp seconded. The board voted in favor and the motion carried.
Board members and staff expressed appreciation for the program’s contribution to student engagement and thanked NDI for the partnership. No new funding details were presented in the board’s discussion.
