Gonzales Youth Council completes six-day summer leadership training, plans school-year projects

Members of the Gonzales Youth Council presented their summer leadership training to the City Council on Sept. 15 and outlined planned activities for the 2025–26 school year.
Jessica Olmedo, the city’s recreation coordinator and administrative analyst, opened the presentation and introduced the newly oriented youth commissioners. Olmedo said the council completed orientation and had 6 members who would begin regular meetings; she said the first meeting will be on Sept. 25.
Youth commissioners described the summer fellowship and training. Shelby Anderson, a returning youth commissioner, said the training included sessions on city operations and leadership-skill development and meet-and-greets with department heads. The group toured the wastewater treatment plant and the new treatment plant construction site and visited the community center with alumni, the presentation said.
Why it matters: Commissioners said the Youth Council’s purpose is to provide a youth perspective to the city and to work on community-based projects and activities. The council listed objectives including empowering youth voice, strengthening teamwork and improving leadership skills.
