The Massachusetts Senate on the floor read and adopted a resolution commending a Boston-based Caribbean civic organization and recognizing a period in August as "Caribbean Week." Sen. Collins, the senator from First Suffolk, introduced the guests and read the resolution to the chamber.
The resolution, read into the record by Sen. Collins, said the organization was founded in 1973 and called for recognition of a week in August to celebrate Caribbean culture, heritage and civic contributions across the Commonwealth. The measure notes municipal Caribbean communities in Brockton, Boston, Springfield and Worcester and directs the clerk of the Senate to transmit a copy of the resolution to the organization9s leaders.
Sen. Collins told colleagues the group "has made significant cultural, economic, and civic contributions to the Commonwealth," and he welcomed the organization's leader, Shirley Shillingford, to accept the citation in the chamber.
The resolution was adopted by voice vote. The reading and adoption were part of the Senate's routine of recognizing community groups and presenting citations; the measure does not create statutory obligations or funding.
