Organizers seek $2,000 in discretionary funding for Talent Skate Classic; council moves request to next meeting

A Talent resident and event organizer requested $2,000 in discretionary funding from the city to support the Talent Skate Classic scheduled for Oct. 11, the grand reopening of the Talent Skatepark. The organizer, Rita Allred, told the council the event needs short‑term funds to secure vendors and advertising and described sponsorship tiers the group will use to raise additional money.

Council discussed options for processing donations and a potential conflict of interest because some council members or staff also assist with the Talent Business Alliance, which had agreed to accept pass‑through sponsorships at no fee. Council members and the city attorney noted that a formal agenda item would be preferable to take the request up for a final decision and to provide transparency.

Given the event date and the organizer’s timeline, councilors asked staff to place the funding request on the Sept. 17 council agenda as an action item so the group can proceed with sponsorships in the meantime through the Talent Business Alliance’s pass-through process (staff and the city attorney confirmed that passing funds through a nonprofit partner with no fee is acceptable if properly documented). No city funding decision was made at the Sept. 3 meeting.
