Local recovery groups plan ‘Victory Over Addiction’ walk and resource fair in Veterans Park

Organizers of a local recovery event urged Cochise County residents to attend Victory Over Addiction, a resource fair and Walk for Recovery scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 27 at Veterans Park. The event opens at 8 a.m., with the walk down Fry Boulevard beginning at 9 a.m., organizers said. Becky Smith of Parents of Addicted Loved Ones said the event gathers treatment and support services and aims to reduce stigma for people with substance use disorders. “We want to raise awareness that it is a thing. You don’t have to be ashamed of it, that there’s help out there,” Smith said on KWCD’s First Watch. Theodore Maguire, community impact specialist with Community Medical Services, said more than 20 services will set up at the fair, including recovery homes, mental‑health services, county health officials, overdose prevention and harm‑reduction programs and support groups. “I am in recovery. I help those struggling with any form of addiction,” Maguire said, offering a contact number for listeners: (520) 508‑1077. Organizers said participants may carry preprinted or self‑made signs with recovery messages, and that the walk typically lasts about half an hour round‑trip along Fry Boulevard. The event is intended both to connect people who need services with providers and to spotlight local recovery supports. “Please come out, join us, get some information, meet some amazing people, and have some fun,” Smith said.
