The Parks and Recreation Committee heard reports on recent sidewalk and park projects and discussed funding and timing for a walking-track repave.
Parks staff reported four sidewalk projects completed near the courthouse and the Taco Company corner and said Church Street and West Main sidewalks are finished. Tony Millican of Millican Paving was expected to provide a paving quote; staff said they have not yet received multiple bids and need to finalize specifications, including milling requirements, before issuing solicitations.
Committee members said the original motion to repave the walking track for about $46,000 did not make it to the finance committee. One committee member told other members that asphalt prices have risen and that an updated estimate is likely “around $50 now.” Members discussed funding the repave from ARPA or the county’s capital projects fund, and one member suggested placing funding on the November agenda to secure the project before spring.
No formal committee motion was recorded on the walking track at this meeting. Staff said they will obtain additional quotes, finalize specs and, if warranted, put the project out for bids. Members also asked to receive copies of the park master plan so the committee can consider alternatives such as additional pickleball or volleyball courts if the pool remains inoperable; one member asked the staff to provide the master-plan copies for the next meeting.
Ending: Staff will prepare specifications and gather at least two additional quotes for the walking-track work and will return with that information to the committee ahead of any funding decision.
