Board approves purchase of two 46‑passenger travel buses; Sam Houston demolition item tabled

Trustees approved the purchase of two 46‑passenger Bluebird travel buses by a 7–0 vote Tuesday. Transportation staff said the buses are stock units available in Lubbock and will be prepared for district service immediately. The board motion approved a purchase price of $564,918.28 total, with a limit of not more than $285,000 per bus and a one‑time board fee of $800; the motion was moved and seconded and passed unanimously.
District transportation staff said the new Bluebird units are less expensive than coach liners (approximately half the cost of coach liners, according to the transportation presenter) and that local servicing and air‑conditioning performance had been satisfactory on current Bluebird units. Staff said the new units will allow the district to retire aging travel vans that are no longer reliable.
Separately, trustees tabled the Sam Houston demolition agenda item after a board member requested more public notice and time for community members to consider whether they might want to acquire the property. The motion to table the demolition item passed 7–0; staff said tabling will allow the district to revisit the item at a future meeting and accept community input in the interim.
No further action was taken on transportation purchases beyond the approved travel buses; staff said a separate procurement for yellow (student) bus replacements will come later.
