Construction on Emerson, Field and playground projects progresses; MWRD review delays Jefferson playground work

District construction staff and the Finance & Facilities committee reported progress on multiple capital projects funded by the district’s referendum and bonds and reiterated an overall status of being “on schedule and under budget so far.”
Officials said playground replacements at Carpenter, Washington and Roosevelt are complete and in daily use; a Jefferson playground project is delayed pending final comments and approval from the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District (MWRD). The architect and engineers have submitted revisions and the district is awaiting MWRD’s final review; staff said Play Illinois has warned that rubber surfacing requires curing conditions (roughly 50°F and above) and that a late-season approval could force a spring construction timeline.
Field Middle School work has progressed: classroom remodels, new casework, LED lighting, flooring, bathroom updates and the addition’s brickwork were described as underway with windows and interior inspections to follow. District staff said the ROE (regional office of education) inspection timeline currently targets December for turnover, and that lockers and furniture procurement is being coordinated to meet that schedule. Emerson’s renovation, including new HVAC units, boilers, air conditioning in the gym, new LED lighting, classroom finishes and new science and life‑skills rooms, was reported substantially complete and ready for an internal tour scheduled during the meeting.
Staff said contingency funds covered unexpected drainage and base issues at several playground sites discovered during installation; because some sites had less stone base under existing surfacing than expected, additional stone and drainage work were necessary. The district plans mandatory pre‑bid meetings for upcoming abatement contracts, expects abatement bidding in November to take advantage of the December break, and intends to present related bids to the board in November or December. Administrators said they are coordinating schedules to perform abatement and other work during breaks where feasible and expect the major scope of projects to wrap up by summer 2026.
No formal vote was required; the board discussed site tours and expressed appreciation for staff coordination on construction and procurement.
