Commission approves courthouse lighting replacement; bid exceeds grant and county will cover shortfall

Fayette County commissioners voted Sept. 18 to accept a bid to replace fluorescent lighting in the courthouse with LED fixtures and to cover the shortfall between the winning bid and the energy grant available for the project.
County staff said the project was publicly bid but yielded only one responsive local bid; a nonlocal bidder submitted a higher figure. Commissioners were told the grant would not fully cover the winning bid and were asked to approve using county funds to make up the difference. A commissioner seconded the motion and the board approved the request by voice vote.
Why it matters: LED conversions reduce energy use and utility costs for county facilities, but when bids exceed grant awards the county must allocate local funds to complete the work.
