Saint Charles High School defeated Warrenton High School 4-0 at Warrenton High School, the Warrenton Sports Network reported, with Julian Deanda scoring twice and Brian Araujo and Jack Neemans also adding goals.
The result left Warrenton, which entered the game 6-1, scoreless. "Julian Deanda has both scores for the pirates," broadcaster Keith Brown said during the telecast, noting, "He scored 2 minutes into the first half, and then 27 minutes later, he scored again." Brown handled play-by-play for the broadcast.
Why it matters: Warrenton came into the game with a strong early-season record; the loss affects the Warriors' momentum heading into their next road match against Pacific. Saint Charles used a mix of early strikes and conservative late-game possession to protect its lead.
Saint Charles opened the scoring on a quick break and a finish by Julian Deanda, an early goal Brown described as coming "2 minutes into the first half." Deanda added his second goal later in the first half to give Saint Charles a two-goal cushion. In the second half Brian Araujo scored with about 26 minutes remaining to make it 3-0, and Jack Neemans converted a set-piece that increased the lead to 4-0 with just under 15 minutes left, according to the broadcast.
Warrenton goalkeeper Riley McGee accounted for multiple game-saving plays. At halftime the announcer reported McGee had eight saves, and in the postgame show Brown said, "Riley McGee played a standout performance in goal," pointing to several one-on-one stops that kept the score respectable for much of the match.
Saint Charles keeper Micah Bryson earned the shutout. The broadcast noted pregame season numbers for both keepers: Bryson had been credited with an 86% save percentage in pregame commentary, and McGee had season totals referred to in the telecast (the announcer said McGee had allowed six goals through seven games before this match). The broadcast also tracked shots and possessions: the announcer repeatedly noted Warrenton had more of the ball and more shots in many stretches, while Saint Charles converted a higher share of its opportunities.
The telecast included cautions and substitutions: at least two yellow cards were reported by the announcer, and both teams made multiple lineup changes during the second half. Alex Cutler, a Warrenton High School junior, performed at halftime.
Looking ahead: Brown said Warrenton will travel to Pacific on Tuesday, Sept. 23. The broadcast did not include formal postgame comments from coaches.
