Huntley board adopts new conduct protocols for members; emphasizes transparency and chain of command

The Huntley Community School District 158 Board of Education adopted a set of board-member protocols intended to clarify how trustees will develop agendas, communicate with staff and the public, and handle closed sessions. The board voted 6-0 to approve the protocols after reading them aloud during the meeting.

The protocols, developed following a training session with the Illinois Association of School Boards, cover topics including agenda development, how members should ask questions about upcoming agenda items, use of email and text (with a reminder that many messages are subject to Freedom of Information Act review), and a requirement that the board president serve as the board’s spokesperson to the media.

Other sections direct members to route concerns through the superintendent and follow the chain of command, avoid ‘‘reply all’’ responses that could violate Open Meetings Act practices, respect closed-session confidentiality and encourage board members to hold one another accountable to the norms. The motion to adopt the protocols passed by roll call vote with Mister Boddy, Mister Craighead, Mister Troy, Mister Fecketty, Missus Murray and Missus Maiorano recorded as voting yes.

Why it matters: trustees said the protocols are intended to increase transparency and reduce misunderstandings between meetings. Several board members read sections of the document aloud at the meeting to ensure clarity for those present and for viewers.
