Senior Center staff gave the commission an operational update covering program enrollments, building repairs, events and planned interior design work.
Staff said several classes have low enrollment and asked commissioners to help spread the word; staff also noted occasional registration system problems and advised residents to call the front desk if they have trouble registering online.
On facilities, staff reported that most windows are installed, the lobby has reopened, and remaining exterior work (alley and stairwell windows) will continue. Starting Sept. 29, engineers will begin work on the building automation system to address temperature control problems in offices and other spaces. Staff said new exterior doors, painting and lighting fixtures are scheduled soon and interior design work for the renovation will move forward next spring.
Program highlights and community events include a monthly "grandbabies" program, language and art classes with low enrollment, a Soul Train block party with food trucks and a donation drive for the food pantry, and a pickleball tournament Oct. 4 with morning clinics for beginners.
Staff said recent facility work may temporarily affect building entries and the Third Floor while automation and kitchen work proceed. They also reminded commissioners that the commission’s role is primarily advisory and informational; staff will provide policy updates and requests for input on master-plan-related items in upcoming meetings.
Ending: Staff encouraged commissioners to continue outreach to boost class enrollment and participation in events, and announced that Greater Iowa City and city staff are available for informational presentations on community topics such as the local option sales tax.
