Checkpoint Automotive, a long-established auto repair business, appeared before the Town of Babylon Zoning Board of Appeals on Sept. 18 to seek renewal of its special exception permit. Owner/operator Niraj Lalvani said he has run the facility since 2013 and that the business has operated on the property since 1993.
Planning and fire marshal memos are in the record; the fire marshal filed comments dated Sept. 18 that flagged several issues including signage illumination and expired extinguisher tags. Lalvani said he immediately addressed the marshal’s concerns, had extinguishers re-tagged and adjusted the illuminated sign to operate continuously rather than on a timer. He also provided photographs showing tires in a gated waste area and asserted that routine deliveries temporarily place tires outside the door before they are moved inside.
Board members closed the hearing and reserved decision, keeping the record open for confirmation from the fire marshal that required corrections have been completed. Lalvani said he had provided documentation and reached out to the marshal the day of the hearing. The board noted the site’s long-standing permitted use and deferred final action until staff can verify fire-safety compliance.
