MassDEP brownfields team announces regional roundtables and highlights Fall River City Pier redevelopment

David Foss, MassDEP's brownfields coordinator, said the bureau will host a regional Brownfields roundtable in Greenfield on Sept. 4 and an online, 90‑minute session on Sept. 9 to improve access to brownfields resources and funding. Foss said the in‑person session will be at the Franklin Regional Council of Governments and the evening online session is intended for stakeholders who cannot attend daytime municipal meetings.
Foss encouraged practitioners and municipal staff to watch the bureau's channels and to share the information with clients and local officials. He asked MassDEP policy staff to distribute the event notice through the BWOC information sharing lists.
Foss also promoted the Take Me to the River festival in Fall River on Aug. 23, saying City Pier is a multi‑decade brownfields turnaround: the site once contained long‑term soil and sediment contamination but has been redeveloped and now hosts community events. Foss noted City Pier received a Brownfields of the Year award from the Environmental Business Council of New England.
Why it matters: the roundtables are intended to connect municipalities, consultants, and state and federal funding partners (MassDevelopment, EPA, regional planning commissions) and to increase awareness of funding and technical assistance available for redevelopment of formerly contaminated properties.
