The River City EDC approved Wednesday the purchase of a scoreboard for Basilio Villareal Municipal Park, accepting the lowest of two quotes for a Daktronics unit priced in the packet at $14,003.89 (staff noted sales-tax deductions would reduce the net vendor price for the city).
"Part of our job is to improve and revamp the parks, and I believe a scoreboard at the parks would just make a better atmosphere for our youth," Marco Trevino, Parks & Recreation director, told the board, noting strong youth participation in recent club seasons. Trevino said the department recorded nearly 800 baseball registrations last year at $40 each, and that baseball alone generated about $32,000 in revenue for the general fund after the Parks & Rec department assumed program operation.
Board members asked whether other quotes were solicited; Trevino said two quotes were obtained and the Daktronics offer was about $2,000–$3,000 lower than the other quote. The board also discussed electrical and labor costs to install the scoreboard; Trevino said those expenses were not included in the quote and would be estimated after the unit was received and staff consulted electricians.
The board approved a staff recommendation to purchase the unit, with the understanding that the stated purchase price excludes the city’s sales-tax exemption and that additional electrical and installation costs will be budgeted and processed as separate items. The motion passed by voice vote; no roll-call tally was recorded.
Board members asked staff to present the scoreboard purchase to the full city commission if the board later requests additional scoreboard units for the other fields.
