The Town of Atherton on Sept. 17 approved an amendment to its professional services agreement with Alta Planning for the update to the town’s bicycle and pedestrian master plan — retitled the Active Transportation Plan — to fund expanded neighborhood and community outreach. The amendment was approved as part of the consent agenda.
Council members clarified that “active transportation” in the update refers principally to physically powered modes (walking, bicycling, rolling) though staff said the plan may include recommendations for traffic calming and other vehicle‑traffic measures intended to reduce stress for active users. Staff said the council had previously augmented the project budget by $50,000 so the amendment enables additional public outreach: up to six neighborhood meetings and two community‑wide meetings, plus preparatory materials and handouts. If fewer meetings are held, staff said the contract would be reduced accordingly.
Council members and staff discussed questions about electric bicycles and other shared‑use devices; staff said facilities classified for bicycles would remain available to cyclists under the Vehicle Code and that the plan will consider facility types (shared‑use, buffered lanes, separated lanes) in light of demand and classification.
The council approved the consent agenda motion that included this contract amendment; the consent agenda passed unanimously.
