District staff updated the board on summer professional development and plans for the school year. Staff said teachers and principals spent time this summer on training that ranged from behavior to safety to academics and that the district is emphasizing professional learning communities (PLCs) as a lever for instructional improvement.
The staff presenter said a small principal team attended a Solution Tree conference over the summer and that the district’s principal team will participate in the ASSA PLCs academy this year. The goal, staff said, is to grow leadership capacity so principals can, in turn, support teachers and use PLCs to drive instruction and student learning. “We are...working to revamp and enhance our work around professional learning communities,” the presenter said.
A board member asked whether professional development hours increased compared with the prior year; the staff presenter said the total number of PD hours was up while the number of staff participating remained about the same. Board members offered thanks and recognition to staff for their summer work; no formal action was taken.
