Matsu Softball proposes two turf fields, 240 parking spaces at Bumpus; Parks commission votes to draft resolution of support

Matsu Softball officials asked the Wasilla Parks and Recreation Commission to back a multi‑phase expansion at Bumpus softball complex that would add two turf fields, new amenities and substantially more parking. The request matters because organizers said demand already exceeds supply for adult and youth leagues; additional turf fields and parking would support more tournaments and regional events that could bring visitors and lodging revenue to the area. Adam Imperato, director of Matsu Softball and USA Softball commissioner for the region, presented a Corvus conceptual drawing and described desired elements: two new turf fields, a walking trail, new dugouts, an essential building with scorekeeping and concessions, another umpire room, improved field drainage and a 240‑space parking lot with overflow/RV parking for tournaments. He said organizers had 53 teams for recent events and turned teams away because of limited field space. Imperato said parents repeatedly asked for a playground adjacent to fields and listed tournament‑support needs: RV parking, electrical hookups for some tournaments and improved overflow access. He also said current fields suffer drainage problems and that turf would reduce weather cancellations. Commissioners asked about funding and process. Scott Bell and staff explained that a resolution of support from the commission would let the group bring the concept to the council and to CIP budgeting; commissioners suggested fundraising, bricks or naming opportunities and grant searches as likely parts of a funding strategy. A commissioner moved that “the commission forms a resolution in support of the new ball fields and improvements for Bumpus.” That motion was seconded and the commission voted in favor; staff will draft a resolution to forward to the council and begin coordinating next steps, including alignment with the CIP schedule. No construction contract or funding was approved at the meeting. Staff said the commission’s resolution would help the council and administration prioritize the project for design, funding and potential matching grants.
