Council adds Veterans Park pedestrian and drainage contract; pedestrian-safety projects also on consent agenda

It awards a contract to BlackRock Enterprises LLC for work at Veterans Park, Catawba Drive and Scotty Courts, and for drainage improvements on Perry Berrywood Drive in the Department of Community and Economic Development, Division of Engineering, in the amount of $516,416.10.
Why it matters: The project is framed as pedestrian-safety-focused and includes changes to walking paths and bicycle lanes. With increased use of bicycles and e-bikes, the township said it will widen paved walking paths and add designated directional bike lanes.
Public comment at the meeting sought specifics. Jim Sharkey asked, “Bike lanes in Veterans Park, where?” A township representative explained the paved walking paths will be widened and “we'll have designated bike lanes on either side for directional” travel with pedestrian traffic in the middle; later a speaker referenced a 13-foot width for the shared area.
The consent agenda also included CA7, a resolution authorizing federal aid for a pedestrian-safety improvement project at Cloughner Elementary School; council members noted school pedestrian safety has been a recurring citizen concern.
The full consent agenda (CA1–CA33) and the added CA33 passed 5-0. Council members praised volunteers and discussed other consent resolutions, including reappointments and grant acceptances.
