School district outreach: Pembroke Pines explores reusing underenrolled school sites, council asks for more engagement

Mayor Angelo Castillo said the superintendent scheduled a public hearing Sept. 29 at Flanagan High School for parents and residents to comment on underenrollment and possible school consolidations. The superintendent asked cities whether they would be interested in alternative uses for properties the district might relinquish.
Commissioners and staff identified two sites for closer study: Walter C. Young (a city‑owned school lease that reverts at lease end) and Pines Lakes (adjacent to the senior center). Staff and commissioners discussed using available property for senior center expansion, parking relief, workforce or affordable housing, or other municipal uses. Mike Dodge and staff said they will tour facilities with the superintendent and evaluate options; commissioners stressed the need to prioritize children’s education and noted that any repurposing would require board approval and careful planning.
Commissioners requested staff follow up with the superintendent’s office, participate in the Sept. 29 public hearing as appropriate, and return to the commission with a report and possible concept options for reuse.
