District presents new cardiac emergency response plan to comply with school code; expands CPR certification options

The board reviewed a new cardiac emergency response plan assembled to meet school-code requirements. The district said it will fold the cardiac plan into its broader emergency-response materials and that it was developed with the nursing staff and input from administrators.
Board members asked who would be CPR certified; staff said nurses are naturally certified and reported that the physical-education department already has certified staff. The presenter described a low-cost training model the district could use through Joliet Junior College (JJC): one certified instructor fee of about $50 plus roughly $2 per certification card would permit local in-service certification. The presenter said training would allow three or four PE teachers to be instructors and then certify large numbers of staff during institute days or other in-service time, with American Heart Association K-12 certification held for two years.
Administrators said the plan is consistent with the district's current emergency-response practices and that they are comfortable with the nursing staff and planned training strategy. The presentation was informational; the board did not take separate action at the meeting.
