Resident group proposes veterans park and native-plantings; mayor asks staff to follow up

A resident and members of a native-plant group proposed establishing a veterans park along Hammond's lakefront path, stretching from the bird sanctuary around the lake to the existing flagpole near the marina. The proposal called for planting trees and native plants to improve quality of life and provide a site to replant trees removed elsewhere.
The resident volunteer said the committee could supply plants through the native-plant group and proposed a community effort to install trees and gardens while preserving space for data-center infrastructure. "My committee and I are proposing a veterans Park...we would be planting trees, and we would be planting native plants," the resident said. The mayor welcomed the idea and asked the volunteer to meet with Scott Miller, the mayor's chief of staff, so city staff and the volunteer committee could explore how to proceed.
Officials said they would try to ensure any planting effort "peacefully coexist[s]" with existing data-center operations and that staff would follow up after the meeting. No funding or firm timeline was announced at the session.
