Officials say South Shore Gateway site under study; mixed-use options, parking and rail constraints noted

City planning and engineering officials discussed the future of property around the South Shore Gateway Station and said rail ownership and proximity to tracks limit residential options for some parcels but that other nearby parcels may be more suitable for mixed-use development.
Ann Taylor, planning and development and a Regional Development Authority member, said the large parcel "is still owned by the railroad" and that "residential would probably not work there because of the line," adding that commercial, retail or office uses might be more feasible. Dean Button, city engineer, said there is a separate roughly 16-acre parcel north of the existing Gateway Station that is more marketable and where "we're looking to put up mixed use residential there starting, hopefully, as soon as next year." Button said some of that parcel is owned by the city while the railroad may convey remaining acreage.
Officials said community outreach continues: a recent public meeting at Anthem Church gathered resident feedback on quality-of-life priorities and possible mitigation of train-related impacts, and staff plan to issue a report within one to two months summarizing community input. Staff noted the station's service and associated traffic changes but did not announce binding agreements or final development approvals at the meeting.
