Zoning board to review campground rules after rising interest; IDPH permitting flagged

LaSalle County officials on Sept. 17 asked staff to compile model language and propose clearer regulations for campgrounds after a series of different campground proposals drew questions from the board.
"The next thing was, campground regulations in section 4. We don't really have anything outlining, any specific conditions or regulations for campgrounds," a board member said during the meeting. Land use director Brian Gift agreed the county lacks detailed guidance and noted many campground proposals also require approvals from the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH).
Gift suggested the county could consider conditions on cabin foundations, property security (fencing or signage), and other consistent requirements to address common concerns. He said some campgrounds in development had faced multiple state hurdles; for example, the board discussed projects near Kentland Park and the Starved Rock area that were advancing through IDPH review and phased installation.
Board members asked staff to research other counties' language and bring draft conditions so the county can treat campground proposals more uniformly. No ordinance changes were proposed at the meeting; staff will return with comparative language and recommended conditions.
