During council reports, Laguna Woods representatives gave an update from the Orange County Mosquito and Vector Control District noting seasonal increases in mosquito activity and recent trends in Aedes-borne diseases.
Councilmember Lee said statewide dengue reports for the last 10 years peaked in 2022—2024 and were lower in 2025, with 55 cases reported so far this year. The district reported a total of eight Aedes-borne disease cases in 2025 and provided a city-by-city breakdown that included cases in nearby communities but none reported in Laguna Woods.
The district representative explained its response protocol: upon receiving a report, the district notifies the city, conducts targeted treatments, leaves door-hanger notices for nearby residents, uses media and website notifications and follows up on resident complaints. While most reported infections result in nonserious symptoms, the district noted some cases can become serious and urged residents to take mosquito-bite precautions.
Councilmembers also asked about flea-borne typhus and plague-related concerns; the district representative said flea-borne typhus reports were lower this season countywide compared with 2024 and that there were not widespread reports of plague fleas spreading from other areas.
No council action was required; the report was received during council member remarks and will inform district and city outreach work.
