County school superintendent warns of federal GEAR UP uncertainty affecting local programs

Maya Donnelly, Santa Cruz County School Superintendent, told supervisors on Sept. 17 that the county's GEAR UP federal grant cycle ends Sept. 30 and that the superintendent's office has applied for a no-cost extension to use carryover funds and has submitted an application for a new grant cycle.
Donnelly said some GEAR UP programs learned of federal cancellations in an email and that consortium partners are sharing information, but the county office had not yet received a definitive federal decision. She asked supervisors and community members to contact congressional offices to advocate for GEAR UP funding in Arizona and described recent local activities such as a "career crash course" and ongoing student supports.
Donnelly also reported other education initiatives in the county, including a community resource fair (Thrive Fest) scheduled for Sept. 27 and the development of AI training for educators at the county's AI center. The GEAR UP comment was presented as a department update and included a request for advocacy rather than a board action.
No board action was taken on the GEAR UP issue at the Sept. 17 meeting.
