United Way announces local office closure, transitions diaper program into Santa Cruz County Diaper Bank

Marcela Chavez, who said she has served as a local United Way director for 14 years, told the Board of Supervisors on Sept. 17 that the local United Way office will close after more than 40 years of operations in the community but that the organization will continue some services.
Chavez said the organization will formally open a diaper bank under the name Santa Cruz County Diaper Bank and will continue popular fundraising activities such as the golf tournament. "We are gonna be, formally opening up our diaper bank... it's gonna be called the Santa Cruz County Diaper Bank," she said, adding thanks to the county and county staff for longstanding support.
Chavez said the group will continue to work with community partners; she described the move as a transition rather than a complete shutdown and thanked county employees for support over decades.
Board members thanked Chavez for her leadership and said they would stay engaged with the diaper bank plans. No county action was taken during the meeting on the organization’s future operations.
