Great Neck swears in two ex officio student members; students to participate nonvoting at board meetings

Both students were described by their principals as student-government leaders and active participants in athletics and extracurricular clubs. The board president administered the oath, and the students took their seats at the dais.
Under a new state law noted in the meeting, ex officio student members may attend and participate in all public meetings and sit with board members but are nonvoting and are not entitled to participate in executive sessions or other nonpublic proceedings. The district said student delegates will also continue to provide monthly reports from each secondary school.
Dr. Bossert thanked the students and said they completed a multi-hour orientation; principals praised the students''character and preparation. The board and superintendent emphasized that the student members would serve as liaisons between the student body and the board and would provide perspectives that help inform district decisions.
No formal vote was required for the swearing in itself; this action implements state law requirements for student ex officio membership and continues the district's practice of including student representation at meetings.
