Fall River license board approves one-day liquor permits for parish and school events

The board approved the permit for St. Anthony of the Desert Church—s gala, scheduled for Oct. 4, 2025, after Father James Root identified the event as a fundraiser "for the good sisters" and confirmed alcohol would be served during the 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. event. Board members also approved three dates submitted by Espiro Santo Church (Sept. 27, Oct. 11 and Nov. 8, 2025) and two winter dates (Jan. 17 and Feb. 6, 2026) for parish dinners; the parish applications list beer-and-wine service in the parish hall from roughly 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. The board also approved a one-day permit for Holy Name School—s Oktoberfest on Oct. 18, 2025, a day-long event with beer and wine service from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
The approvals were taken by motion and unanimous vote of the two board members present. Chairman Attorney Greg Brilliant reminded applicants of existing policing and licensing requirements; when Holy Name School asked about the earliest start time for alcohol service, Brilliant said, "8 is the earliest you can serve alcohol in general, so you—re all set." The board recorded no public opposition on the petitions.
The approvals were routine: in each case a board member made a motion to approve, the chair seconded, and the motion carried with all members present voting in favor. Several applicants confirmed the events are recurring or described as "first annual" fundraisers; the board recorded the scheduled dates and the alcohol type listed on each application. Applicants were advised to comply with police requirements, fees and other conditions tied to one-day permits.
The board did not propose any changes to the permits at the meeting. Applicants were told to pick up their licenses or paperwork with the board office afterward and to coordinate required policing or fee payments with city staff.
Copies of the approved applications and any required police details will be handled by the licensing office ahead of each event.
