Budget advisory board reshuffles fall schedule, asks for clearer department ask summaries

The Fort Lauderdale Budget Advisory Board voted to cancel its October and November meetings, move the December workshop up to Dec. 10 and consolidate agenda items into December and January so staff can recover after budget season. The decision followed an extended discussion about improving the board’s review process for the fiscal 2026–27 budget.
Board members argued for a clearer, department-by-department summary that lists what each department requested and what was actually funded in the preliminary budget. Several members said the current packet is thorough but hard to use when trying to identify unapproved requests. One member suggested staff restore the earlier preliminary format that included asks and a separate funding column, but staff said that format caused public confusion and was removed from widely distributed documents; staff offered to provide a clearer internal summary to the advisory board.
The board also discussed presentation timing. With 16 departments now in scope, members suggested allocating more time to departments with larger budgets (police and fire) and shorter times for smaller, status-quo budgets. Members proposed using the Balancing Act software to allow board members to submit and track comments in advance or live during meetings; staff said they can create a board-specific environment in the tool that would keep the advisory board’s feedback separate from general public comments while complying with sunshine rules.
Formal action: a board member moved to cancel October and November meetings, reschedule the December meeting to Dec. 10 (instead of Dec. 17), and shift agenda items into December and January; another member seconded. The board took a roll-call vote; five members registered yes, one member was out of the room and recorded as absent; the motion passed.
Why it matters: members said better, more targeted materials would let them provide more actionable recommendations to the city commission during budget development. Staff said it will rework packets, consider timing by budget size, and produce a clearer internal spreadsheet showing department asks vs. funded items for the advisory board’s use.
