Munhall awards Main Street rehabilitation contracts; council notes funding gap

Munhall Borough council voted Sept. 16 to award two contracts for a Main Street rehabilitation project and discussed the project’s funding and schedule.
The borough engineer reported that the low bid for the general/sidewalk/concrete portion of the work was $751,879.17 from Liberoni (general/mechanical). Council awarded that contract. For the street-lighting and electrical portion, council awarded the low bid to Maranti contracting for $1,388,863.
Officials and engineers said those two awards combine with earlier expenses to create a total project scope of roughly $2.1 million, excluding prior engineering and furnishings, and that the borough is short about $1.2 million if all planned work proceeds as originally envisioned. Borough staff said they are pursuing multiple grant opportunities, including a Main Street management grant, and that staging the work by segments may be necessary if additional funding is not secured. "We might have to stage the project accordingly so that we can split it into sections," the engineer said during council discussion.
Council approved both contract awards by motion and voice votes at the Sept. 16 meeting. Officials asked that pre-construction details reflect the funding contingencies and requested written confirmation from bidders on schedules and staging options.
