Southborough committee and golf volunteers agree on temporary CPA signage, plan permanent sign mock-ups

The Community Preservation Committee agreed to install temporary signs acknowledging Community Preservation Act funding for an irrigation project at the Galt golf course and to develop mock-ups for a permanent sign that will list multiple CPA‑funded projects.

Jennifer Salig, chair of the Community Preservation Committee, welcomed the Galt golf committee and opened the discussion about two signage needs: temporary signs for the irrigation work in progress and a permanent sign that would reference the conservation restriction and the golf course restoration (parking lot and retaining wall).

Committee members said they favored using a reusable temporary lawn‑style vinyl sign that reads, in substance, that the irrigation work was paid for by "residents of Southborough through the Community Preservation Act." Committee members noted there are existing small signs ("about five" on hand) left from a previous director that could be used temporarily, but several members preferred a larger vinyl with a frame so it is visible while work is underway.

The committee and the golf volunteers also discussed whether the permanent sign should list all three projects — the conservation restriction, parking lot/retaining wall restoration, and the irrigation system — or wait until the irrigation work is complete. Committee members said permanent signage is required to close out the projects and recommended placing one permanent sign near the clubhouse entrance rather than multiple signs across the course. The group also discussed a larger roadside sign visible from Route 85 as a separate enhancement to better identify the golf course for drivers.

Committee members asked the town recreation staff and volunteers to produce mock-ups in Southborough/CPA branding colors and return with color and layout options at the next CPC meeting. Kristen (committee member) and Ellen (committee member) volunteered to coordinate sign design with an in‑town sign vendor or the company the golf course uses, with the goal of installing a temporary sign before the golf season ends (the course uses the parking lot for Christmas trees after it closes right before Thanksgiving).

The committee emphasized they want the temporary sign to be reusable at other CPA projects if it is left generic. On permanent signage, they asked for a mock-up that would allow a single permanent sign at the clubhouse entrance to enumerate the funded projects.

Next steps: committee members agreed to have the volunteer/design team prepare several mock-ups and color options and to bring them back to the CPC for final language approval at the next meeting.
