Board awards $2.29 million drilling contract for Well 10 in Superstition Vista area

On Sept. 16 the Apache Junction Water Utilities Community Facilities District approved a construction agreement with Yellowjacket Drilling Services LLC to drill a new groundwater well (Well 10) in the Blossom Rock / Superstition Vista area. The contract amount is $2,285,435.53; the roll-call vote was unanimous.
District director Mike said the wells are intended to provide redundancy for the districts surface-water supply (CAP water) and to give additional supply if surface sources are limited. He said the district will drill to a depth of roughly 200 feet with an 18-inch stainless-steel casing, though final depth will depend on underground conditions encountered during drilling.
Mike cautioned that the drilling contract covers the casing and well construction only; equipping the well with pumping and electrical gear would be a separate cost next year. "So the the 2,200,000.0 is is for just the casing and the well itself. It's not for any of the equipment to pump the water out in the future. That'll be another price tag next year," he said. He estimated equipping could cost roughly $1.5 million, depending on final production and design.
Mike said a previously drilled well at the district produced about 2,500 gallons per minute and that the district's current treatment-plan throughput is about 4,000,000 gallons per day. Staff said they issued a request for proposals, evaluated about 10 drilling contractors on site and recommended Yellowjacket for the drilling work. The board approved the award to proceed with drilling; final commissioning will depend on measured production and water quality after drilling and any subsequent equipping decisions.
