Board approves $2.62 million contract to replace Water Campus 2 booster pumps

The Water Utilities Community Facilities District on Sept. 16 approved a construction agreement with MGC Contractors Inc. for Phase 1 of the Water Campus 2 booster pump station replacement, with a contract amount of $2,623,296.74. Chairperson Wilson presided over a unanimous roll-call vote.
District director Mike told the board the existing booster pumps are roughly 30 years old and are "start-and-stop" units that cycle when pressure falls, which can stress pipes. "So this site will be here for a while. So we're looking at replacing these 2 booster pumps, with 3 new booster pumps, but a fourth can" be added later, Mike said. The project replaces start-stop pumps with variable frequency drives (VFDs) to hold pressure near a setpoint rather than cycling off and on.
Mike said operators plan to set the system to maintain about 60 PSI and let the pumps vary flow to keep pressure between about 56 and 58 PSI. The change should reduce energy use and reduce pressure swings that accelerate leakage. The district expects the upgrade to help meet larger fire-flow demands in the industrial park, potentially up to about 3,000 gallons per minute depending on construction of new developments.
The district will piggyback on the City of Peorias water/wastewater contract as a Job Order Contract (JOC) and will use a consultant for design; Phase 2 is estimated roughly at another $2.5 million. Mike said the total was budgeted in this fiscal year.
