The City of Maricopa City Council approved a pair of related actions on Sept. 16 to realign North Maricopa Road and fund intersection upgrades near West Honeycutt Avenue.

Derek Shearer, planning and zoning division, described the abandonment case ABDN25‑002 and resolution RES25‑37: the city will abandon an approximately 350‑foot portion of right of way between West Honeycutt Avenue and West Alterra Parkway; Desert Cedars Equities LLC will acquire the abandoned portion without compensation. "As required by the city code, notification letters were mailed out to local utilities on August 12," Shearer said, and staff recommended approval because the segment was not identified for future city transportation improvements.
A separate agreement presented by a city staff member identified as Josh would realign the road and upgrade the intersection: the improvements include a new fourth signal leg, replacement of existing signal equipment with camera capability, new curb and gutter, turn lanes and updated street signs. Project cost was described as "over $2,000,000," with the city agreeing to reimburse the developer for 50 percent of eligible costs. Council member Manfredi moved approval of the abandonment; the motion was seconded and carried unanimously. The intersection participation agreement was also moved, seconded and approved unanimously.
Council questions focused on scope and timing. The presenters said construction was already underway on the larger development and that intersection work would start soon; they acknowledged a short period of disruption during construction but said the completed project would improve traffic flow, including near Maricopa High School.
