Selma council discusses animal shelter staffing; council members ask to join hiring panel

Selma — Council members on Sept. 16 discussed animal shelter operations and asked to participate in the interview process for the city’s animal services manager search.
Staff told the council the job posting for the animal services manager would open the following afternoon and that salaries in the packet had been updated; Interim HR Director Ballard said four positions would be posted that day with updated salary figures. Council members who serve on the shelter ad hoc advisory group requested to be notified and to participate in panel interviews because of their subject matter knowledge.
Police staff and the police chief described ongoing challenges responding to animal calls caused by staff turnover and training delays. The police chief said the department is working with the city’s communications director to publicize interim procedures and encouraged residents to call the police department for injured animals if they cannot reach shelter staff immediately.
Council agreed to allow staggered interview panels (similar to the recent city manager search) so ad hoc members could participate without delaying recruitment. No formal hiring action was taken at the meeting; staff will proceed with recruiting, provide interview schedules to the council ad hoc members and return with updates.
Public comment included thanks to Second Chance Animal Rescue for helping remove a deceased animal when immediate shelter service was not available.
