MISD presents updated gifted-and-talented plan, announces expanded elementary supports and a Sept. 30 informational meeting

Montgomery ISD staff on Sept. 6 briefed the Board of Trustees on the district’s compliance with the Texas State Plan for the Education of Gifted and Talented Students and outlined local steps to expand services, communicate with families and evaluate program outcomes.
Lindsay Norton Perrigo, who presented the training required under state guidance, said the district will provide gifted services in the four core content areas, deploy depth-and-complexity strategies and resume high-school seminar offerings. She said the district has hired a paraprofessional to support elementary GT extension services and has revamped junior-high GT advisories.
"Our goal again is that that leads to the development of advanced level products and performances," Norton Perrigo said, summarizing the state plan’s aim that gifted students demonstrate advanced-level work compared with peers.
Key points presented - Compliance: The state plan, Texas Education Code and the Texas Administrative Code set the district’s requirements; the board must be trained annually and the district must post its GT program guide publicly. - Services: GT services will be offered across language arts, math, science and social studies, including project-based learning and the Texas Performance Standards Project where appropriate. - Elementary supports: The district hired a paraprofessional (previously a registered behavior technician) to provide equitable extension services across elementary campuses. - Identification and reassessment: Multiple measures will be used for identification; students may be reassessed annually and the district has procedures for transfer students and exits. - Family outreach: An informational meeting for identified students and families is set for Sept. 30 at 5:30 p.m. at the Den; the district has notified families and posted information on social media.
Norton Perrigo said the district will share a formal program-evaluation report next spring after collecting a year of data. Trustees were trained on the state plan during the presentation.
