Kingman transit staff brief council on bus stop seating and shelter options

Kingman — Cart staff briefed the City Council Sept. 16 on seating and shelter availability at bus stops across the city’s four deviated routes (yellow, green, blue, red). Sherry (CART) reported the routes meet hourly at Walmart (two shelters) and described the number of shelters and benches currently installed on each route; the blue route has 25 stops with seven shelters, the green route 22 stops with seven shelters, the red route 27 stops with six shelters and the yellow route 31 stops with three shelters and 11 benches.
Sherry said adding shelters or benches often triggers ADA‑access upgrades for pads and pathways and may trigger NEPA (National Environmental Policy Act) review when federal funds are used; she expects many residential stops will be better served by lower‑profile ‘semi seats’ that are less attractive to loitering and graffiti and are less expensive (quotes around $1,200 each). CART staff said they will include seating requests in the next grant application and that they evaluate stop‑by‑stop requests, with attention to homeowner preferences in residential areas.
Council asked whether all stops require benches (they do not) and whether benches could be color‑coded by route (staff noted some stops serve multiple routes and signage rather than bench color is the usual approach). Staff said vandalism and loitering are operational concerns that have led to removal of benches in certain locations in the past.
