District reports extensive summer work at Kegwin and schoolwide IAQ assessments; major mechanical reviews will be multi-year expense

MIDDLETOWN — Facilities director Marco Gaylord told the board that maintenance staff, central office and school teams spent most of the summer preparing Kegwin for relocated McDonough students and staff. Work included repainting classrooms, gym and cafeteria repairs across several schools, pool resurfacing at the high school, and installation of new HVAC or IAQ equipment where grant-funded.
Gaylord said the HVAC/IAQ grant installations are nearly complete and that Bealfield (likely Bealfield/Buellfield) air conditioning projects were finished in time for warm weather. The district intends to reuse playground wood chips and finish rubber surfacing when the rest of the playground materials arrive.
On indoor air quality, Gaylord and others explained a recent state law requires assessments of building IAQ and mechanical systems. The district completed initial assessments and will perform more detailed mechanical-system reviews (boilers and major systems) on a rolling schedule; the state has allowed districts to assess about 20% of buildings per year rather than all at once. Gaylord estimated the mechanical assessment work will cost roughly $500,000 to $700,000 and said the district will apply for state grant rounds as portals open.
