Hauppauge principals report smooth start to school, highlight facility upgrades and student programs

Principals from three Hauppauge elementary schools reported to the Board of Education that the new school year opened smoothly, citing strong staff effort, facility upgrades and robust family engagement.
Dr. Christopher Smalley, principal of Bretton Woods Elementary School, told the board the building opened with “smiling faces” and credited custodial, IT and security teams for preparing the building and grounds, including recently completed bathroom renovations and new multipurpose courts where students participated in a ribbon-cutting.
Michael Gollin, principal of Forest Brook Elementary School, said the school hosted widely attended meet-the-teacher nights and implemented free breakfast delivery to student desks, with daily preorders averaging about 140–200 breakfasts at Forest Brook. He praised the custodial team for managing additional programs displaced by a separate parking-lot renovation at another campus building.
Scott Bullis, principal at The Pines, said a summer survey of families and staff confirmed a strong sense of community at the school. His remarks noted new bathrooms, additional parking spaces for staff and a festive “block party” start-of-year event supported by the PTA. He thanked district central office staff for frequent check-ins during the opening weeks.
Board members and Dr. Murphy repeatedly acknowledged custodial and transportation staff for their role preparing buildings and supporting the start of the year. Principals also noted new hires who started the week before school and were effectively in their classrooms on day one.
No formal board action was required for the presentations; the reports were delivered during the recognitions and elementary principal presentations portion of the meeting.
