Council approves use variance for recovery group home at 240 North Main Street

The Statesboro City Council approved a special-use variance (B25-O8-O2) permitting a group home to operate in an existing historic single-family house at 240 North Main Street, a property zoned highway-oriented commercial. Justin (planning staff) told council the property, built about 1920 and recently used as a law office, meets group-home requirements for size and would preserve the residential character on the lot.
During council discussion, the applicant clarified the proposed use would be a women’s recovery residence named Lost and Found; the applicant said Bullock County currently has only eight beds for women and the proposal would add 18 beds at this site. Planning staff recommended approval and noted the planning commission had a 6–0 concurrence. The approval includes a condition that the variance does not grant the right to alter the building without obtaining appropriate permits.
Councilmembers who spoke praised the city’s recovery services and said additional housing capacity for persons in recovery meets a community need. The council voted to approve the variance with the staff-recommended condition.
